Lang Beats Wiesner For USGA Senior

Women’s Amateur Title, 6 and 5

Tulsa, Okla. – Diane Lang, 53, of Jamaica, claimed her third USGA Senior Women’s Amateur title in four years Thursday, beating Toni Wiesner, 61, of Fort Worth, Texas, 6 and 5, in the final match at Tulsa Country Club.

Lang, who also won in 2005 and 2006, took control of the match by winning five consecutive holes to stand 6 up after the 10th.

With her win, Lang becomes the sixth woman to win the Senior Women’s Amateur three or more times. She was also a semifinalist in 2007, making her 22-1 in four years of matches at this championship for women age 50 and older.

USGA Senior Women's Amateur

WHO CAN PLAY – The USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship is open to female amateur golfers who will have reached their 50th birthday on or before Sept. 20, 2008, and have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 18.4.

ENTRIES – The USGA accepted 478 entries for the 2008 championship. A record 543 entries were received in 2006.

QUALIFYING – Sectional qualifying for the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur was conducted from Aug. 12-26 at 23 sites. One of the qualifiers was held at Quail Creek Country Club in Oklahoma City, Okla. Two of the six individual qualifiers from that site are from Oklahoma – Teresa Delarzelere of Broken Arrow and Patricia French of Tulsa, who scored an ace during stroke play qualifying for the 2007 Championship.

PAR AND YARDAGE – The golf course at Tulsa Country Club will be set up at 5,760 yards with a par of 36-35-71.

COURSE SET-UP – The USGA Course Rating/Slope Rating® for Tulsa Country Club during the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship will be 73.9/133. The green speeds will be maintained at 10-10½ feet on the Stimpmeter. There will be a 6-foot wide area of intermediate rough on each side of the fairways that will be trimmed to 1 inch. The primary rough areas will be maintained at 1¾ inches during the championship week.The greens are Penncross grass with a mix of Poa annua. The rough is Bermudagrass.

FREE ADMISSION – Tickets are not needed for this USGA championship, and spectators are encouraged to attend.

SCHEDULE – The starting field will consist of 132 golfers. Following 36 holes of stroke play on Saturday and Sunday, the low 64 scorers will advance to match play.

  • Sept. 20 (Saturday) – First round of stroke play
  • Sept. 21 (Sunday) – Second round of stroke play
  • Sept. 22 (Monday) – First round of match play
  • Sept. 23 (Tuesday) – Second and third-rounds of match play
  • Sept. 24 (Wednesday) - Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of match play
  • Sept. 25 (Thursday) – Championship final match, 18 holes

    • COURSE ARCHITECT – A.W. Tillinghast created the original design for the golf course, which opened in 1908. Jay Morrish did renovations in 1988. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Tulsa Country Club.
