Anne Sander

Anne Sander, 50, of Seattle, Washington, shot rounds of 72-80-76-228 to win the championship by three strokes over Harriet Hart of Ridgefield, Connecticut, and eight strokes over Charlotte Wood of Beaumont, Texas. The win was Sander's fourth in a USGA competition. She won the Women's Amateur in 1958, 1961 and 1963.

Sander shot a two-under-par 72 in the first round, which was played on a day that featured heavy rain and gusty winds. She led Wood and Millie Zimring by five strokes. Sander was seven over par through six holes of the second round, but was one under par the rest of the way for a round of 80. Zimring's second 77 pulled her to within two strokes at 154. Hart stood another stroke back at 78-77-155.

After parring the first hole of the final round, Zimring lost six strokes over the next five and fell from contention. Hart had cut Sander's lead to one stroke after six holes. The margin was still one after 11 holes. Sander then birdied the 12th and picked up another stroke when Hart bogeyed the 13th. Sander parred in for a three-stroke victory.

Sander was the Group I winner (ages 50-54). Lois Hodge won Group 2 (ages 55-59), shooting 247; Dot Porter won Group 3 (ages 60-64) with a 245 total; and Helen Sigel Wilson won Group 4 (ages 65 and over) with 251. The USGA accepted 136 entries for the championship.
