Moore's Second-Round 70 Helps Win Stroke Play Medal

Sunriver, Ore. – Patty Moore, 57, of Charlotte, N.C., with a 1-under-par 70 Saturday, shot a 36-hole total of 3-over-par 145 to claim medalist honors by one stroke at the 2007 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur at Sunriver Resort’s 5,975-yard Meadows Course.

"I’ll take being in the top 64,” said Moore, a three-time winner of the North and South Senior Amateur. “I just don’t want it to be the kiss of death and have to go home early. I want to stay around.”

Moore’s 145 tied for the third-lowest medalist score since the championship moved from a complete stroke-play format in 1997.

"The morning rounds are easier to score with because the wind is down,” said Moore, a three-time Carolinas Golf Association Player of the Year. “I’ll take it.”

Moore, who birdied holes 13, 14 and 15, added: “The three best putts I hit were the three birdies I made.” The birdies offset bogeys on Nos. 9 and 12.

Moore cited strong iron play for the sub-par score.

"I’d have taken another solid round like I had (Saturday) but it got a little better than that,” said Moore, who is playing in her seventh Senior Women’s Amateur.

Trailing Moore by one stroke was Toni Wiesner, 60, of Fort Worth, Texas, who shot the best round of stroke play, a 2-under 69. Combined with her first-round 77, Wiesner, a two-time runner-up, shot 146. She was a semifinalist in 2006.

"I came out and worked on my putting because I didn’t putt well (Saturday),” Wiesner said. “I putted much better and made several putts to save myself.”

The top two scorers were followed by 2004 champion Carolyn Creekmore, 55, of Dallas, Texas, and 1999 Senior Women’s Amateur runner-up Cecilia Mourgue D’Algue, 61, of France, at 147. Mourgue D’Algue has reached the semifinals three times.

Four-time Carol Semple Thompson, of Sewickley, Pa., and Diane Lang, of Weston, Fla., the 2005 and 2006 champion, advanced to match play at 151 and 153, respectively. In addition, three-time winner, 73-year-old Marlene Stewart Streit, of Canada, moved into the field of 64 at 155.

Beatriz Arenas, 59, of Guatemala, who shot 70 to hold the lead after the first day, could not duplicate her feat and shot 82 but easily qualified.

The most notable among those missing the cut was four-time winner Anne Sander, 70, of Seattle, Wash.

Patricia French, of Tulsa, Okla., scored the seventh known hole-in-one in championship history on the par-3 16th hole while shooting 78 in the morning.

Of the six players in the field from Oregon, three made match play: Rachel Whittington, of Lake Oswego, 1972 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Mary Budke, of Eugene, and Loree McKay of Portland. Joan Edwards-Powell, of Portland was involved in the 10-way playoff for the final eight berths into the match play field of 64.

The first round of match play begins Monday and continues through Thursday’s championship final.

The USGA is the national governing body of golf in this country and Mexico, a combined territory that includes more than half the game's golfers and golf courses.

The Association's most visible role is played out each season in conducting 13 national championships, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.

The USGA also writes the Rules of Golf, conducts equipment testing, maintains an official Handicap System and administers an ongoing “For the Good of the Game” grants program, which has allocated more than $56 million over 10 years to programs that seek to grow the game.
