Anne Sander

Anne Sander, a 52-year old career amateur, easily won the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur Championship, shooting 75-74-75-224, at the Tournament Players Course, in The Woodlands, Texas. She was so dominant that she held a 12-stroke lead with nine holes to play, and won by nine strokes over Alice Dye, of Delray Beach, Florida.

Mrs. Dye, posted a score of 233, including a 75 in the final round. She birdied the final hole to prevent Mrs. Sander from winning by the largest margin in the event's 28-year history.

Mrs. Sander, of Seattle, Washington, was one of eight former champions in the field. She had also won three Women's Amateur championships. Mrs. Sander went ahead in the second round, passing Betty Probasco, from Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, who had celebrated her 60th birthday by shooting a 73 in the first round. Mrs. Sander started slowly, with 41 for her first nine holes. She came back in 34, on the second, and played every nine holes in the 30s the rest of the way.

Mrs. Dye, herself a two-time champion, easily won the 60-64 age group. The other two age bracket winners were former champions as well. Marlene Streit, the champion in 1985, won in the 55-59 age group, and Dorothy Porter, who had won four senior women's titles, won the 65-and-up age bracket.
