Marlene Streit

Marlene Streit, 51, of Stouffville, Ontario, Canada, shot 224 for 54 holes to defeat Louise Wilson of Louisville, Kentucky, by three strokes at the Sheraton Savannah Resort and Country Club in Savannah, Georgia.

Streit became the second golfer ever to win the Women's Amateur and Senior Women's Amateur. Dorothy Porter was the first to win both championships.

Streit shot a two-under-par 70 in the opening round to take a three stroke lead over Janice Calin of Edina, Minnesota, and Mrs. Dick Kaufman of San Antonio, Texas. Streit's round tied the Championship record set by Alice Dye in 1979 and tied by Calin last year.

In the second round, Mildred Stanley of Escondido, California, shot a round of even-par 72 to gain a share of the lead with Streit. Four-time champion Dorothy Porter recorded her second consecutive round of two-over-par 74 to pull to within two strokes of the lead.

Streit opened the final round with three pars to three bogeys for Stanley but could not build on that lead in the ensuing holes. At the 12th hole, Stanley had come back to within two strokes of the lead. Stanley bogeyed the 13th and double-bogeyed the 14th, however, and fell out of contention. Her round of 82 left her in a tie for third place.

Streit finished with a round of 78. Wilson shot 76 to finish alone in second place. Stanley, Porter and 1984 Champion Constance Guthrie, who posted a final-round 72 (the best round of the day by four strokes) finished tied for third at 228.

Streit was the winner for Group I (ages 50-54); Wilson was the Group 2 (ages 55-59) champion; Porter won Group 3 (ages 60-64) and Ruth White Miller of Placentia, California was the winner in Group 4 (ages 65 and over). The USGA received 184 entries for the Championship.
