Mrs. Philip Cudone

Mrs. Philip Cudone, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., led every round at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, Pebble Beach, Calif., and won by a record 10 strokes over Mrs. Hulet P. Smith, of Pebble Beach.

Mrs. Cudone scored 236 for the 54 holes and equalled the Championship record set in 1967 by Mrs. Marge Mason, of Ridgewood, N.J. Mrs. Smith, the Champion in 1964 and 1965, scored 246, one stroke better than Mrs. Mason, who had 247.

Mrs. Cudone was pursued closely by Mrs. Smith throughout the first two rounds. Mrs. Cudone started with 80 and was two strokes ahead of Mrs. Smith. Both ladies scored 79 in the second round. Mrs. Cudone had 77 in the last round; Mrs. Smith's final round was 85.

In age class competition, Mrs. Cudone won Class A (50-54); Mrs. Smith won Class B (55-59); and Miss Maureen Orcutt, Englewood, N.J., won Class C (60 and over) with 255. For the first time the entry limit of 120 was surpassed and some entries had to be rejected.

 
Championship Facts

COURSE ARCHITECT – John Fought, an Oregonian who won the 1977 U.S. Amateur, made revisions to the Meadows course in 1999. The redesign resembles great American courses from the 1920s and 30s with its use of directional and fore-bunkers. The original Meadows Course opened in 1969.

COURSE SETUP – The USGA Course Rating/Slope Rating® for Sunriver's Meadow Course during the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship is: 74.4/141.

Teeing ground – .275"
Fairways and driving range tee -- .450-.475"
Collars around greens – .300", approximately 30 inches wide, or one mower width
Putting greens – no height prescribed; speed: 10-10 ½ feet on the Stimpmeter.
Primary rough – 2-2 ½ "
Intermediate rough – 1 ¼", approximately 6' wide or one mower width

WHO CAN ENTER -- Open to female amateur golfers who will have reached their 50th birthday on or before Sept. 1, 2007, and have USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 18.4.
