Texans Toni Wiesner and Carolyn Creekmore Square Off In Semifinal Round

Santa Cruz, Calif. - Toni Wiesner has been here before; close to being the last golfer standing at a USGA championship.

Wednesday morning, the 57-year-old lefty from Ft. Worth, Texas, defeated the hometown favorite and reigning women's club champion Sandy Woodruff, 2 and 1, to reach the semifinal round of the USGA Senior Women's Amateur at Pasatiempo Golf Club.

Wiesner will face Carolyn Creekmore, 52, of Dallas, Texas, in her afternoon match. Creekmore stormed past Ann Lahey of Kentfield, Calif., in her quarterfinal match, 7 and 6.

The other quarterfinal winners were Elizabeth Haines, 56, of Gladwyn, Pa., and Martha Lang, 51, of Mandeville, La. The championship will conclude with the 18-hole championship final match on Thursday.

Wiesner edged past long-time nemesis and four-time Senior Women's Amateur champion Carol Semple Thompson of Sewickley, Pa., on Tuesday afternoon. Now she's two wins away from the brass ring. Wiesner was the Senior Women's Amateur runner-up in 1997 and 2001.

"Let's not go into this," she said with a laugh. "I'm tired of being a bridesmaid."

Her afternoon opponent, the long-hitting Creekmore, continues to play better with each match. She won six of the last seven holes to close out her quarterfinal match and was the equivalent of just 2 over par for 12 holes.

In the other bracket, Haines made several long putts to advance.

"I haven't putted this well all week," said an emotional Haines, who allowed herself a brief moment to think ahead. "Advancing in a USGA championship is always your highest goal as an amateur."

Lang, the 1988 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion who is playing in her first Senior Women's Amateur, rallied from four holes down to win her quarterfinal match with a par on the first extra hole.

The Senior Women's Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
