Medalist, Defending Champion Move On At USGA Senior Women's Amateur

Austin, Texas – Medalist Sherry Bowman, 50, of Manassas, Va., and defending champion Carol Semple Thompson, 54, of Sewickley, Pa., each won first-round matches to advance Monday at the 2003 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at the 5,762 -yard, par-72 Foothills course at Barton Creek Resort & Club.

Bowman built a 5-up lead against Caroline Repenning, 61, of Kenilworth, Ill., after winning the par-4, 270-yard 12th hole with a birdie, but lost three of the next four holes and saw her lead shrink to 2 up after bogeying the par-4, 290-yard 16th hole. She recovered to win the par-3, 174-yard 17th hole and earned a 3-and-1 victory.

“I barely survived out there,” Bowman said. “I still have this mental block where match play is concerned. I need to use the same focus I use in stroke play.”

Semple Thompson struggled early in her match against Gwendolyn Tierney, 65, of Anderson, Ind., falling one hole down after a bogey on the par-3, 136-yard 3rd hole. She squared the match with when Tierney bogeyed the par-5, 506-yard 5th hole, and took the lead for good with a birdie at the par-4, 351-yard 7th hole.

“I bogeyed the first four holes, but I was only one down, so that was good,” Semple Thompson said. “Then I pulled myself together and had some birdies after that. I was pretty nervous on the first few holes.”

Semple Thompson, seeking her fifth consecutive Senior Women’s Amateur crown, earned a 4-and-3 victory when the players matched pars on the par-5, 474-yard 15th hole.

Also advancing was 1956 U.S. Women’s Amateur and 1985 and 1994 Senior Women’s Amateur champion Marlene Streit, 69, of Canada. Streit never trailed en route to a 2-and-1 victory against Kathleen Colliflower, 50, of Rochester, N.Y., and is pleased thus far.

“I wanted to qualify for match play, and win a match or two,” Streit said. “You just have to keep grinding.”

Payton Davies, 59, of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, a member at Barton Creek, twice faced a four-hole deficit against Cathy Schaefer, 56, of Fort Myers, Fla., but came back to win six of the final seven holes to win, 2 up.

Among the other winners Monday were 1988 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Martha Lang, 50, of Mandeville, La., 1997 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur champion Nancy Fitzgerald, 59, of Carmel, Ind., and 2002 Senior Women’s Amateur runner-up Barbara Berkmeyer, 59, of St. Louis, Mo.

The second and third rounds of match play are scheduled for Tuesday. The quarterfinal matches will be played on Wednesday, and the semifinal match and 18-hole championship final are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 11.

The USGA Senior Women’s Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
