Defending Champion Advances, Medalist Ousted At Senior Women's Amateur

Austin, Texas – Carol Semple Thompson, 54, of Sewickley, Pa., kept her hopes of a fifth consecutive championship alive, while medalist Sherry Bowman, 50, of Manassas, Va., was ousted during third-round action at the 2003 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur at the 5,762 -yard, par-72 Foothills course at Barton Creek Resort & Club.

Semple Thompson won her 27th consecutive match in the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur, a record that spans five championships, with a 4-and-3 victory over Bernice Gallagher, 52, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

“I’m very pleased to be in the quarterfinals,” Semple Thompson said. “I’ve been questioning myself this week, so I’m glad to be this far but I’m still trying to think about getting pars and playing each hole and not thinking about the future or my opponent.”

Her quarterfinal opponent, Anne Carr, 59, of Seattle, Wash., will be a familiar foe. The two met in the finals of the 2001 Senior Women’s Amateur and in the semifinals a year ago. Both matches went to the 18th green, with Semple Thompson earning a 1-up victory each time.

“Both matches were very close,” Semple Thompson said. “ Anne is a very good player, so I know I have to be on the ball right off the bat.”

Carr advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-and-1 win over 2000 runner-up Toni Wiesner, 56, of Fort Worth, Texas. Carr knows her match against Semple Thompson will be a tough one.

“I hope everything is working tomorrow, and I know that it has to be,” Carr said. “My mental game has to be there and all my shots have to be there because it’s going to take birdies to beat Carol.”

Bowman fell behind early against Pat Milton, 50, of Munroe Falls, Ohio, and couldn’t get back on track. Milton took the lead with a par 4 at the 340-yard 2nd hole and never trailed en route to a 6-and-5 victory.

“I’m driving the ball very well, and have good course management, and putts are starting to drop,” said Milton. “I’m really pleased with where my game is now.”

Semple Thompson will not be the only past champion in the quarterfinal field. She will be joined by 1956 U.S. Women’s Amateur and 1985 and 1994 Senior Women’s Amateur champion Marlene Streit, 69, of Canada, and 1997 Senior Women’s Amateur winner Nancy Fitzgerald, 59, of Carmel, Ind.

Streit made it to the quarterfinals for the first time since the championship switched to a match-play format with her 3-and-2 win over Patty Moore, 53, of Charlotte, N.C. Streit has yet to trail in any of her three matches.

“I just played neat and tidy today,” said Streit. “I’ve always played the golf course, so it’s like playing stroke play. If you shoot par and they beat you, then they deserve to win.”

In her match against 1988 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Martha Lang, 50, of Mandeville, La., Fitzgerald birdied the par-5, 474-yard 15th hole to take a one-hole lead, and went on to earn a 1-up victory.

Carolyn Creekmore, 51, of Dallas, Texas, staged a big comeback in her third-round match against Taffy Brower, 58, of Boynton Beach, Fla. Creekmore was down three holes with three to play, but came back to win the next three holes, culminating with a birdie on the par-5, 460-yard 18th hole to square the match. Creekmore earned the win on the 20th hole when Brower conceded the hole after her ball moved after she addressed it and then hit it into a water hazard.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Marianne Towersey, 52, of Newport Beach, Calif., and Jo-Ann Lindsay, 62, of Edina, Minn.

The quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Wednesday, and the semifinal match and 18-hole championship final will be played on Thursday, Sept. 11.

The USGA Senior Women’s Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
