Brower
Holds 2-Stroke Lead After First Round At USGA Senior Women's Amateur
Austin,
Texas – Taffy Brower, 58, of Boynton Beach, Fla., was the only player
in the field to shoot even par and holds a two-stroke lead after the
first round of stroke play at the 2003 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship
at the 5,762 -yard, par-72 Foothills course at Barton Creek Resort &
Club.
Brower,
who has reached the quarterfinals at the last two Senior Women’s Amateurs,
had three birdies, including one at the par-4, 270-yard 12th hole, where
she hit her drive to the fringe of the green and two-putted for birdie.
She
thought scores would be lower, and was surprised to be in the lead at
the day’s end.
“We
had no wind, and the course was playing shorter,” Brower said. “I was
really plugging away and trying to keep my score in perspective.”
Another
quarterfinalist from the 2002 championship, Alison Murdoch, 53, of Canada,
stands two strokes back, as does Mary Isbell, 59, of Oneaota, Ala.
Four-time
defending champion Carol Semple Thompson, 54, of Sewickley, Pa., was
three strokes off Brower’s pace, at 3-over-par 75.
“I’m
pleased to have the first round out of the way, and I’m pleased to be
at least in the mid 70’s,” said Semple Thompson. “It’s not a bad start.
I’m just trying to get into match play.”
For
Semple Thompson, her mind is on the golf course, and not on her quest
to become just the second woman in USGA history to win the same championship
in five consecutive years.
“I’m
trying not to dwell on it, because if I thought about that, it would
be a total distraction from my general game plan of going out and hitting
each shot and trying to make a par on each hole,” she said.
Five
players were tied with Semple Thompson, including 1997 Senior Women’s
Amateur champion Nancy Fitzgerald, 59, of Carmel, Ind., and Anne Carr,
59, of Seattle, Wash.
Carr,
the runner-up at the 2001 Senior Women’s Amateur, was recently diagnosed
with breast cancer, but chose to delay medical treatment until after
the championship.
“It
was a no brainer,” said Carr. “I’ve worked too hard not to be here.”
Also
in the hunt, four shots back, is Marlene Streit, 69, of Canada, who
won the 1956 U.S. Women’s Amateur and 1985 and 1994 Senior Women’s Amateurs.
After
a second day of stroke play Sunday, the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur
field will be reduced to 64 players for match play. The first round
of match play is scheduled for Monday, the second and third rounds will
be played Tuesday, the quarterfinal matches are on Wednesday, and the
semifinal match and 18-hole championship final are scheduled for Thursday,
Sept. 11.
The
USGA Senior Women’s Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted annually
by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly
for amateurs.
