Bowman,
Semple Thompson Advance At 2003 USGA Senior Women's Amateur
Austin,
Texas – Medalist Sherry Bowman, 50, of Manassas, Va., and defending
champion Carol Semple Thompson, 54, of Sewickley, Pa., each recorded
second-round victories Tuesday at the 2003 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur
Championship at the 5,762 -yard, par-72 Foothills course at Barton Creek
Resort & Club.
Bowman
was down two holes through nine but cut the deficit to one hole with
a par 4 at the 375-yard 10th hole. Another par by Bowman at the par-3,
154-yard 14th hole squared the match, and she took the lead for good
with another par 4 at the 290-yard 16th hole. The two players matched
pars at the final two holes and Bowman had a 1-up win.
Semple
Thompson kept her hopes for a fifth consecutive Senior Women’s Amateur
crown alive with a 4-and-3 victory over Lynn Larson, 60, of Aurora,
Colo. Semple Thompson benefited from 11 pars and one birdie against
Larson, who struggled with two bogeys and three double bogeys.
Also
moving on to the third round was Marlene Streit, 69, of Canada, who
never trailed against Peggy Woodard, 60, of Virginia Beach, Va. Streit,
the 1956 U.S. Women’s Amateur and 1985 and 1994 Senior Women’s Amateur
champion, made a par 5 at the 460-yard 18th hole and earned a 1-up victory
when Woodard double bogeyed.
Two
other past USGA champions will meet in Tuesday afternoon’s third-round
action. Martha Lang, 50, of Mandeville, La., the 1988 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur
champion, earned a 6-and-4 win over Mary Isbell, 59, of Oneaota, Ala.
Lang will face 1997 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur champion Nancy Fitzgerald,
59, of Carmel, Ind., who advanced with a 1-up victory over 2002 Senior
Women’s Amateur runner-up Barb ara Berkmeyer, 59, of St. Louis, Mo.
Anne
Carr, 59, of Seattle, Wash., needed 19 holes to outlast Payton Davies,
59, of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, a member at Barton Creek. Davies squared
the match at the 18th hole when she stuck her approach shot with a foot
of the hole. But Davies three-putted from 25 feet on the 19th hole,
the par-4, 375-yard 1st hole, and Carr, the 2001 Senior Women’s Amateur
runner-up, escaped with a 1-up victory.
The third round of match play will be played Tuesday afternoon, and
the quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Wednesday. The semifinal
match and 18-hole championship final are scheduled for Thursday, Sept.
11.
The
USGA Senior Women’s Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted annually
by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly
for amateurs.
