Anne Sander, of Seattle, Washington, made up five strokes in the
last round, caught Marlene Streit, and then won the 18-hole playoff,
at Del Rio Golf and Country Club, in Modesto. It was the second
consecutive Senior Women's championship for Mrs. Sander, 53.
She scrambled back into contention after an opening round of 80,
then shot one-under-par 71 in the final round to tie Mrs. Streit
at 225 for the 54 holes of regulation play. Mrs. Streit holed a
15-foot putt to par the final hole and force the playoff the next
day.
Mrs. Sander won by six strokes, 72-78, as she holed birdie putts
from 10, 20 and 60 feet. She was seven strokes ahead with six holes
to play. Mrs. Streit, of Ontario, Canada, led after the first and
second rounds, shooting 72-77-149. Mary Ann Morrison, of Dubois,
Wyoming, finished one stroke behind the leaders, at 226.
While Mrs. Sander won the 50-54 age bracket and Mrs. Streit the
55-59 division, Mildred Stanley captured the 60-64 age bracket,
and Dorothy Porter was the winner among those 65 and over.
