Constance Guthrie, 52, of Spokane, Washington, shot 225 for 54
holes to win at Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear, Alabama. Guthrie
won her second Senior Women's Amateur win in three years.
Marlene Streit of Stouffville, Ontario, Canada, the 1985 champion;
Ceil Maclaurin of Savannah, Georgia, the 1976 winner; and Barbara
Young of Westport, Connecticut, were tied for second, six strokes
back.
Guthrie took the first round lead by shooting 73, one over par,
three better than Maclaurin and Mary Jones of Champaign, Illinois.
Guthrie faltered early in the second round, playing the first nine
in 41. She came back in 35 and retained her three-stroke lead. Barbara
Mclntire's 72 gave her a 36-hole total of 152 and second place.
June Mayson of nearby Mobile was alone in third, one stroke behind
McIntire. No one challenged Guthrie on the final day. The 1984 champion
shot another 76 to win the championship. Mclntire's 83 left her
10 strokes back. Streit, who opened with an 83, rebounded with rounds
of 75 and 73 to finish in the second-place tie.
Guthrie was the winner for Group 1 (ages 50-54); Lois Hodge won
Group 2 (ages 55-59); Maclaurin won Group 3 (ages 60-64); and Virginia
Jarvis won Group 4 (ages 65 and above). The USGA received 137 entries
for the championship.
