Mrs. Paul Dye, Jr., of Delray Beach, Fla., defeated Mrs. Robert
H. Maclaurin, of Savannah, Ga., in an 18-hole playoff, 76-79, to
win the Senior Women's Amateur Championship at the Rancho Bernardo
Golf Club, in San Diego, Calif. It was the third playoff since the
Championship was originated in 1962, and the first since 1969.
Both players had completed the regulation 54 holes with 232 totals.
Mrs. Dye had rounds of 74-75-83, and Mrs. Maclaurin, 76-81-75. Entering
the final round, Mrs. Dye led Mrs. Paul G. Black by seven strokes
and Mrs. Maclaurin and three others by eight strokes.
In the playoff, Mrs. Dye parred the first nine holes for 35 and
a four-stroke lead. Mrs. Maclaurin cut the lead to two strokes after
16 holes. Mrs. Dye scored pars on the last two holes. Mrs. Ellen
Bowering just missed the playoff with a 233 total to finish third.
The defending Champion, Mrs. Mark A. Porter, tied for seventh
place with a 239 total. In the age-group competition, Group I was
won by Mrs. Dye with her 232; Group 2, by Mrs. Black, 237; Group
3, by Mrs. James A. Roessler, 242; and Group 4, by Mrs. Frank Fisk,
257.
