Mrs. Mark A. Porter, 57, of Cinnaminson, New Jersey, won
her second consecutive Senior Women's Amateur Championship
and the third of the last five years with a 54-hole score
of 238, 19 over par, at the Spring Lake (New Jersey) Golf
Club.
Mrs. Porter also had won in 1977 and 1980. Her rounds of
81-80-77 gave her a four stroke winning margin over Mrs. Paul
Dye, Jr., the 1978 and l979 Champion, who had a 242 total
on rounds of 80-80-82. Both players are past members of the
U.S. Curtis Cup team.
Tied for third at 244 were Helen Sigel Wilson, another former
Curtis Cup player and non-playing captain, and Mildred Stanley.
Alberta Bower, the 1975 Champion, finished fifth at 247. Mrs.
Porter, who was the 1949 Women's Amateur Champion, has now
won two national titles 32 years apart, a USGA record.
She also continues as the only golfer to win both the Women's
Amateur and Senior Women's Amateur Championships and now belongs
to a select group of 11 golfers who have won four or more
USGA championships.
The scores were unusually high because of the cold, windy
conditions which persisted throughout the week. Mrs. Robert
Ihlanfeldt was the first round leader with a 79, six over
par. Five players were just one stroke back at 80: Mrs. Dye,
Mrs. Bower, Mrs. Betty Probasco, Mrs. Louise Wilson and Mrs.
Kathryn Salley. At 81, two strokes behind were Mrs. Porter
and Mrs. Helen Sigel Wilson.
After two rounds, Mrs. Dye took over the lead with a total
of 160. A trio of players were one behind at 161 including
Mrs. Helen Sigel Wilson, Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Ihlanfeldt.
On the final day, Mrs. Dye was in control early. Helped
by a birdie at the 8th hole, Mrs. Dye held a two stroke lead
going into the final nine holes. However, Mrs. Porter matched
par 37 on the final nine, including a birdie at the par-3
16th and a bogey at the par-5 17th where she three-putted.
Mrs. Dye faltered with three bogeys and one double bogey
on the final four holes and none of the other players could
mount a serious challenge down the stretch. Mrs. Porter's
closing round of 77 matched a second round 77 by Mrs. Lois
Hodge as the best of the championship.
Mrs. Dye was the champion of Group I (ages 50-54) and Mrs.
Porter again was Group II champion (55-59). Mrs. Helen Wilson
was Group III champion (60-64) and Mrs. Ann Gregory won her
third successive Group IV Championship (65 and over). The
USGA received 113 entries, far short of the record 186 received
in 1980.
